He is
43 NC NC NC. His wife
Myrtle Victoria Loy is 34 NC and they have Doris Anne 12 NC, Edgar (Julius
Edgar) 10 NC, Weldon 9 NC, Sylvia 7 NC, Lucille 5 NC and Stephen 3 NC. He owns
his farm and is a son of Julius Putnam and Elvira Paschall from Guilford
County. They have been there up till 1935 when they were here. Cecil was born
March 1, 1895 and will die in Fayetteville, Cumberland County June 23, 1952.
Myrtle was born September 11, 1903 and will die in Alamance County August 28,
1987. The daughter Doris was born August 2, 1927 and will die December 2, 1985.
She married a Turner and then a Johnson man. Julius was born in 1929 and died
in 2005. Part of the Quaker family from Guilford County.
ANN PUTNAM Washington Park, Beaufort County
She is
21 KY and single. She is with her mother Lula 40 NC and her third husband
William A. Repass 40 NC. Lavinia Ann Putnam is a daughter of Douglas Gaylord
Putnam and Lula Hurdle and was born in Ashland, Boyd County Kentucky on March
29, 1918 and will die in North Carolina May 29, 1991. She was with her folks in
1920 there and then Douglas died in 1921 and her mother married William Sweets
and they were in Bethesda, Maryland in 1930. Then her mom married William and
they were here in 1935. This is a line that is a direct connection with General
Israel Putnam from Massachusetts and then Connecticut.
COREE PUTNAM Ashville, Buncombe County
She is 40 SC single and a nurse at the Appalachian Hall
Sanatorium.
ERNEST PUTNAM Ashville, Buncombe County
He is a Negro 51 SC and widowed. He was here in 1930. He was born June 15, 1889 and
died in Ashville June 15, 1977 at age 87.
KATE PUTNAM Ashville, Buncombe County
She is 57 NC and widowed. Still at home are Amelia 36 NC, Pearl 32 NC,
Margaret 28 NC, and Rachel Cordelia 19 NC. Kate Melinda Tinsley was married
here to Van Shiflin Putnam. He was a son of Docker Shiflin Putnam and was born April 9, 1878 in Polk County
and was here since the 1880s. He died here on April 29, 1937. Kate was born
July 16, 1882 and will die here February 7, 1946.
MARION PUTNAM Ashville, Buncombe County
She is about 60 MD and widowed. She was married to Charles Harrison Putnam from Illinois who died here in 1916. He was a son of John Putnam and Eliza Sanders from Jo Daviess County Illinois and then he was in Chicago with his mom in 1900 and 1910. Marion has been here since 1915 or so as she signed his death certificates. Don’t have any information on her though. New England family though.

for the railroad. His wife Ruby Basinger is 43 TN. This is a second marriage
for her as she has a son John Bethard 16 TN and then
they have a daughter Rosemary 17 KY. He is a son of Otho Azro
and Tennie Putnam from Knoxville, Tennessee. This line goes back to Illinois
and then New Hampshire and then back to Massachusetts.
SARAH LOU PUTMAN Ashville, Buncombe County
She is 19 NC single and boarding. She is listed as a ‘partner’ with several other girls. Boarding House. She is Sarah Louise Putnam a daughter of Lloyd Yates Putnam and Wilma Lalla Bridges from Rippys, Cleveland County. She was born there March 6, 1921 and was at home there in 1930.
W. RAY (WILLIAM RAYMOND) PUTNAM Ashville, Buncombe County
He is 32 NC and his wife Miriam Ramsey is 31 NC and they have Jane 5 NC. He is a display manager at a department store. He is a son of Robert Julius Putnam and Addie Goodrum and was born in Mecklenburg County August 7, 1907 and will die in Greensboro, Guilford County December 8, 1988. He is in Orlando, Florida in 1945 and 1950 with his wife Miriam.
FLOYD M. (McFEE) PUTNAM Black Mountain Township, Buncombe County
He is
50 NC, his wife Mozell Gertrude is 38 SC and they have Elsie 16 NC, Floyd M. 14
NC, and Blanche Virginia 11 NC. There is a nephew Lewis Livingston 18 SC. That
may be Gertrude’s last name. He is a son of Anzie
McFee Putnam and Harriet McIntyre from Rippys, Cleveland County. He was born
there July 5, 1889 and will die December 12, 1945 in Georgia. He was with his
widowed dad there in 1920. He got married in 1922, and they were here in 1930.
SUE PUTNAM Black Mountain Township, Buncombe County
She is 55 NC and widowed. She is living with her married daughter Lena 35 NC, her husband Thomas Hollifield and their family. Susanna Mace was married to Charles Putman who was a son of Edmond Alston Putman and Etta Jane Stuart from Mitchell County. He married Susanna Mace about 1902. They were in Mitchell County in 1910. He died November 3, 1917, and Susie and their kids were in McDowell County in 1920. Susie is a daughter of Adam and Nancy Mace and was born in Mitchell County June 6, 1884, and will die in Ashville October 31, 1970. The daughter Lena was born March 13, 1905 and died in Buncombe County April 1, 1994 at age 89.
BELLE PUTNAM Swannanoa Township, Buncombe County
She is 21 NC single and listed as a cousin of Bassir and Julia Baldwin. She is a daughter of Robert Marion Mird Putnam and Margaret Ellis Green from Hayward County. She was born there October 10, 1918 and will die in Buncombe County July 21, 2005. She married Leonard Ballard and they had four children. Julia is a illegitimate daughter of Charles Putman and Susanna Mace from Mitchell County and then her widowed mom came here and is listed above with her married sister Lena Hollifield.
CECIL PUTNAM Swannanoa Township, Buncombe County

Cecil Adam Putman 19 NC and his wife Margaret Louise Edwards is 17 NC. They
live with her folks Charles and Elise Edwards. His birth record states his
parent was Susie Putman and he was born in McDowell County April 19, 1922.
Susan Adeline Mace was the widow of Charles Putman. She was with Charles in
Mitchell County in 1900 and 1910 and then widowed in McDowell County in 1920. So
he was born out of wedlock, and no clue to his dad. According to OBITS he was
born April 19, 1922 and died here in Swannanoa on August 17, 2002. Margaret was
born March 30, 1923 and will die in Ashville February 23, 1990. NC birth
records shows they will have a son Cecil Adams Junior in Ashville on February
4, 1941. They will also have another son William Cecil Putnam born August 20,
1948 and will die May 22, 2007.
CHARLES PUTNAM Swannanoa Township, Buncombe County
He is
23 NC, his wife Louise Kathleen Briggs is 25 NC and they have Robert 1/12 NC.
He is a spinner in a blanket Mill. He is Charlie Western Putnam a son of
Robert Marion Putnam and Margaret Ellis ‘Maggie’ Green and was born in Hayward
County April 1, 1917 and will die in Clyde, Hatwood
County January 6, 2000.
FRANK PUTMAN Swannanoa Township, Buncombe County
He is 28 NC single and a lodger with a Reed family. He is a machinist at a blanket mill where everyone else works. He is Frank Allen Putnam a son of Robert Marion Putnam and Margaret Ellis ‘Maggie’ Green and was born in Hayward County September 6, 1911 and will die in Waynesville, Haywood County March 19, 1967.
GEORGE A. PUTMAN Morganton, Burke County
He is 26 NC single and an inmate at the State Hospital for the Insane. He is a son of William Andrew Putman and Mary Leona Pinson from Rutherford County where he was born and there through 1935 or so.
RALPH PUTMAN Morganton, Burke County
He is 31 NC and his wife Lalah is also 31 NC. He is Benjamin Ralph Putman a son of Charles Sylvanus Putman and Annie Miller from Cleveland County. He was born there February 25, 1908 and will die here in Morganton June 23, 1950. He is a salesman in a men’s department store. She is a nurse at a school for the deaf. They were in Cleveland County in 1935.
CLAY PUTMAN Globe Township, Caldwell County
He is
26 NC and his wife Charlotte Gregg 22 NC and they have Charlene 6 NC. Thomas
Clay Putman is a son of Thomas Cole Putman listed below. He was born here
September 16, 1913 and will die in Mansfield, Ohio December 17, 1969. His dad
is listed below and you will see the original name was Pittman and they aren’t
Putmans at all.
SHERRILL PUTNAM Hudson Township, Caldwell County

24 NC, his wife Velma Iris Shook 23 NC and they have Shirley 3 NC and Carroll 1
NC. He works in a furniture factory. He is Sherrill Crystal a son of George
Thompson Putnam and Evie Hamrick and was born in Cleveland County June 5, 1915
and will die in Los Angeles, California April 22, 1962. And yes like the song ԁ
boy named Sueՠthis is his real name and he has an older brother Jewell Putnam.
EVIE PUTNAM Lower Creek Township, Caldwell County
She is 51 NC and widowed as she was in 1930. Still at home are Janelle 20 NC and Nancy 16 NC. Evie Hamrick was married to George Thompson Putnam in Cleveland County in 1920 and then widowed in Lenoir, Caldwell County in 1930. George was a son of Eli F. Putnam and Julia Thompson from Cleveland County. He died in Lenoir February 9, 1929. Evie is a daughter of Abraham and Nancy Hamrick.
LEE N. (NORRIS) PUTNAM Lower Creek Township, Caldwell County
He is 29 NC, his wife Mabel Thelma Sides is also 29 NC and they have Mattie 3 NC. Lee works in a furniture shop and is a son of George Thompson Putnam and Evie Hamrick. His widowed mom is just down the road from here. Lee was born August 1, 1911 and will die in May 1986.
THOMAS
C. (COLE) PUTMAN Lower Creek Township,
Caldwell County
He is
now 69 KY KY KY and is a miller
at a cotton mill. His wife Mollie Chambers Eldridge is 69 NC. He is listed as
Thomas Cole Putman on his kids’ birth records. Found a couple of family sheets
for him. He was born in Kentucky in November 1871 and was a son of Renson and Elmyra Pittman from Tennessee. In 1880 he is at
home with them in Morgan County Tennessee and listed as Pittman. Now it seems
he has taken on the spelling of the Putmans here in North Carolina. Wataugua County is on the northwest border of North
Carolina and is on the border of northeast Tennessee. Obviously couldn’t write
and his name was transcribed as it sounded. That’s how my Putnam name got
changed to Putman in Virginia in the 1650s. He will die in Lower Creek,
Caldwell County February 25, 1942. He married Mollie in 1898. She was a
daughter of John Andrew Chambers and Plutina C.
Eldridge. She was born in December 1875 in Wilkes County North Carolina and
will die in Morgantown, Burke County North Carolina February 15, 1932. The name
has remained Putman still. Been in touch with descendants.
MINNIE PUTMAN Patterson Township, Caldwell County
She is 28 NC and says married. She has Tommie 10 NC and Frances 5 NC. She lives with her folks Edgar and Frankie Younce. Minnie Younce was married to Paul Monroe Putman in Lower Creek, Caldwell County in 1930. He is a son of Thomas Cole Putman and Mollie Chambers from there. The name was originally Pittman in Kentucky, but was changed to the way it sounded in the 1890s here in North Carolina.
AMBROSE PUTMAN Morehead City, Carteret County
He is listed as Andrew on Family Search and Ambrose on Ancestry and the name is Ambrose. Listing is 73 NC widowed with his son Alex 20 NC. Can’t find either anywhere any time earlier. I would guess ԣopiedՠdown wrong and not a Putman or Putnam.
KENNETH N. (NEIL) PUTMAN Morehead City, Carteret County
He is 28 WI and his wife Nettie Snooks 21 NC and they have Kenneth N. 1 NC. They live with her folks Percy and Lou Snooks. Ken is a son of Giles Putman and Emma Shaw and was born in Waupaca County Wisconsin and the with them in Oshkosh, Winnebago County in 1920 and 1930. He is a music director for a W.P.A. band here in town. Dutch family out of New York State in the 1860s.
T. (THOMAS) MALDRY PUTMAN Clines, Catawba County
He is 54 NC NC NC and a bridge carpenter for the state highway department. His wife Julia Miller is 51 NC and they have Nell 29 NC, Columbus 23 NC, Carl 19 NC, David 18 NC, and twins Ed and Ned 14 NC. He is Thomas Maldry Putman a son of Thomas Dickson Putman and Fanny Jenkins from Cleveland County. He was born October 23, 1885. He will die in Wake Forest, North Carolina February 27, 1972. He married Julia Miller on December 1, 1908 in Cleveland County. She is a daughter of Columbus and Emona Miller and was born in Cleveland County November 16, 1888 and will die in Catawba County November 17, 1943. They were in Cleveland County through 1920 and then in Gaston County in 1930.
ALMA PUTMAN Hickory, Catawba County

NC and divorced. She has Rachel Ann 8 NC with her. There were a couple of
Putmans here in 1930, but married to other gals and not the right ages. No
ideas yet.
FRED PUTMAN Hickory, Catawba County
He is 39 NC KY NC and a framer in a cotton mill. His wife Vergie Estelle Smith is 37 NC and they have Frederick G. 16 NC and Ruth E. 12 NC. He is a son of Thomas Putman and Mollie Chambers. He was born April 28, 1900, and was at home with them in Caldwell County in 1910 and 1920. He will die here in Hickory March 12, 1975. Vergie was born July 29, 1902 and will die here October 11, 1984. The son Frederick Glen was born December 8, 1923 and will die here January 27, 1990. Ruth Estelle was born here May 30, 1927 and will die here September 23, 2002. She will marry George Odis Lee Boyles. Now, Thomas Putman is a son of Renson and Elmyra Pittman from Tennessee. In 1880 he is at home with them in Morgan County Tennessee and listed as Pittman. Then it seems he has taken on the spelling of the Putmans here in North Carolina. Not one of ԯurs.ռo:p>

NC. He is Jewell Conley Putnam a son of George Thompson Putnam and Evie
Hambrick from Cleveland County and then Caldwell County where Jewell was born
December 25, 1905 and he will die in Hayward County September 20, 1970.

Lee 10 NC, Raymond C. 4 NC. There is a nephew Lee R. 14 NC. Then there is her
widowed mother Amy Gantt 55 NC and two of her brothers and sister. Ray is a son
of James Robert Putman and Hattie Ann Randall and was born in Fairview,
Greenville County South Carolina September 23, 1901 and will die in Morganton,
Burke County North Carolina September 4, 1976. Glenda was born in Rowan County
May 29, 1904 and will die here in Hickory October 21, 1982.
NESBIT PUTMAN Newton, Catawba County

NC. Nesbit Dixon Putman is a son of Thomas Maldry
Putman and Julia Miller from Cleveland County. He was born there May 14,
1911 and will die in Catawba County June 17, 1977. He is a sander in a
furniture factory.
CHARLIE I. (IRVIN) PUTNAM Boiling Springs, Cleveland County

Mollie Moore is 54 NC. He is a son of Samuel Evans Putman and Artie Hardin. He
owns his own farm. He was born November 24, 1874. He married Mary Narcissus
'Molly' Moore. He will die here in 1952. She was born in 1890 and will die in
Boiling Springs August 3, 1968.
FRANK J. (JULIUS) PUTMAN Boiling Springs, Cleveland County
He is 23 NC (born March 13, 1917 and will die in Shelby August 3, 1996) and his sister Careen 21 NC. They are kids of Burton Pleos Putman and Gazzie Lovelace from here. Burt died in 1920 and they are living with Burt’s sister Edith 65 NC and her husband John Julius Spurlin 81 NC. They were also here in 1930 as was their mother Gazzie.

He is 29 NC, his wife Lillian Ruth Hicks is 24 NC and they have William L. 5 NC, Marjorie E. 3 NC and Peggy J. 8/12 NC. He is a battery filler at a cotton mill here in town. He is a son of Leo Ramseur Putnam and Ada Gertrude Weaver and was born October 25, 1910 and will die in Shelby September 9, 1974. Ruth was born July 14, 1916 in Mooresville and will die there August 8, 2006.
WILLIAM C. (CONNALLY) PUTNAM Boiling Springs, Cleveland County
He is
65 NC NC NC born here May
12, 1875, and he owns a farm. His wife Mary Elizabeth Poston is 57 NC and they
have Robert Blair 23 NC born March 28, 1907, Elizabeth 19 NC born November 17,
1910, Bryan McBride 11 NC born July 27, 1918, and Myal
Benjamin born August 16, 1922 still at home. They had a dozen kids. If you
think this is a lot of kids, his dad had 19 with two wives and wore them both
out I guess. He is a son of Joseph Devanney Putman
and Susan Davis from Shelby where he has been up till now. He will die May 20,
1953. Mary Elizabeth will die in Shelby on October 4, 1963.
ORA PUTNAM Double Shoals, Cleveland County
She
is 59 NC widowed and lives with her married daughter Fannie 28 NC and husband
Gene Lattimore 31 NC. Looks like Cora Hallman who was/is married to Miller
Alexander Putnam from here. She is still listed with him now in Lincolnton,
Lincoln County. Maybe they split or something.

58 NC and widowed as his wife Mary Vickers has died in the past few years. He
is living with his married daughter Viola 27 NC and her husband Jack C. Stone
32 NC and their three kids. He is a son of David Putman and Mary Catherine
Carpenter from Gaston County. He was married to Mary Vickers and they were in
Crowder Mountain, Gaston County in 1920 and here in Kings Mountain in 1930. He
will die here himself September 22, 1942.

at a grocery store. His wife Audrey Leona Ware is 48 NC and they have Nina 19
NC still at home. Also here is their now married daughter Alma 23 NC and her
husband Waray Augustus Plonk 24 NC and daughter Betty Jean Plonk just born. He
is a son of Lorenzo Dow Putnam and Clarissa Jane Kendrick. They were married
here November 13, 1913 and are here all their lives. He was born January 8,
1888 and will die here April 21, 1962. She was born October 24, 1891 and will
die here February 4, 1975.

farm. His wife Lela Lee Hord is 45 NC. They were married July 26, 1916 and they
now have still at home, Elzie Lee 19 NC (born February 8, 1921, and died
in Kings Mountain on August 30, 1972. He married Edna L. Gainey), Emma Elizabeth 16 NC (born
August 15, 1923. She married a Rayfield man and died in Kings Mountain on
September 8, 1997), Lloyd
Franklin 14 NC (born December 17, 1925 and died in Kings Mountain March
23, 1990), Forest Craven 9
NC (born October 31, 1930), and twins Billie & Bobbie 3 NC. He is Charles
Lawrence Putnam a son of Charles Franklin Putman and Elizabeth Jane Kendrick.
He was born September 14, 1892. His wife Lela Hord was born January 21, 1895
and died February 15, 1986 at age 91. He died in Kings Mountain January 24,
1961.
EULIE W. (WADE)

Putman is a son of Jesse Henry Putman and Mattie Caldwell from Gaston County.
He was born there April 14, 1902. They have been in Gaston County up till a
couple of years ago.

He is 32 SC, his wife Mozelle Carol is 30 SC and they have Dorothy 13 NC. He is a son of Jesse Henry Putnam and Martha ԍattieՠCaldwell from here in Cleveland County. He was born November 10, 1907 when his folks were working in a mill in Cherokee County South Carolina. He will die here in Kings Mountain December 11, 1970. Mozelle was born December 4, 1909 will die in Greensboro, North Carolina May 7, 2009 at 100 years old. They both work in a cotton mill like most folks in town.
JAMES PUTNAM Kings Mountain, Cleveland County
He is
50 NC, his daughter Nettie 31 NC and son Clyde Melvin 20 NC. Found a sorta sheet on Clyde Melvin born January 27, 1920 in
Gastonia and he married Violet Jergnigan. His draft
registration lists his father as R. Y. Putnam in Kings Mountain. That would
make James here Robert Yancy Putnam age 60 NC, Nettie is Nellie 36 NC.
Handwriting makes James and Yance look alike. Robert
Yancy is a son of John Putnam and Hester Black from Gaston County.
PAUL PUTNAM Kings Mountain, Cleveland County
He is 26 NC, his wife Edna Lucille Tate is 23 NC and they have Wayne 2 NC. There is also a housekeeper Johnsie Smith 20 NC. Paul Sidney Putnam is a son of Jesse Henry Putman and Mattie Caldwell from Gaston County. He was born there March 26, 1912. They have been in Gaston County up till a couple of years ago. He will die here in Kings Mountain on February 28, 1983. They both work in a cotton mill like most folks in town.
TOM PUTMAN Kings Mountain, Cleveland County

Lula Chaney is 54 NC and they have Flora Lee 19 NC and Grover 17 NC. He is a
son of David Putman and Catherine Carpenter from Gaston County. Thomas was born
April 19, 1885 and died June 3, 1955. He married Etta Lula Chaney born March 2,
1882 and died October 13, 1952. They were in Gastonia, Gaston County in 1910
and in Kings Mountain Cleveland County in 1920. In 1930 they were here and they
were in York, South Carolina in 1935. He is a weaving room oiler in a cotton
mill.

He is 55 NC NC NC and is a house carpenter. His wife Mildred Goforth is 45 NC, and they have Velma E. 27 NC, Louise 24 NC, Wade H. 16 NC and William S. 10 NC. He is Wade Hill Putman a son of Lorenzo Dow Putnam and Clarissa Jane Kendrick. He was born April 28, 1885 and will die March 30, 1951. He married Mildred W. Goforth in Cleveland County on September 21, 1910. Mildred was born April 21, 1893 and will die in Gastonia on July 2, 1978.
WILLIAM PUTNAM Kings Mountain, Cleveland County

Mary Susan Fulton 45 SC. He is a son of Marcus L. Putman and Emily Jane Camp,
and was born here in June 1858. He will die here in Kings Mountain January 4,
1944. According to OBITS, Mae was born January 30, 1882 and died in Kings
Mountain in June 1979. They were here in 1910 and 1920. He was here in 1900,
but married to a Hattie. I don’t have her last name, sorry.
WILLIAM B. (BOYD)
PUTNAM Kings Mountain, Cleveland County
He is
31 NC, his wife Helen 31 NC and they have Mary Frances 4 NC. He is a son of
Andrew Bertie Putman and Mary Vickers and was born in Crowder Mountain, Gaston
County and then was here by 1930. He is a salesman at a retail grocery store.
TAFT S. (SPURGEON) PUTMAN Lawndale, Double Shoals Township, Cleveland County
He is
31 NC as is his wife Ruby Estelle Warlick. They are both public school
teachers. He is a son of Leo Rasmeur Putnam and Ada
Weaver from Cleveland County. He was born October 17, 1908 and will die April
14, 1992. Ruby is a daughter of Oscar Vance Warlick and Laura Alice Dixon and
was born February 6, 1908 and will die in Shelby on November 18, 1991.
CLARENCE PUTNAM Rippys, Cleveland County

daughter Donnis 14 NC. Also here is Ozetta Short, listed as a ward. He is Clarence Gordon a son
of Anzie McFee Putman and Harriet McIntyre. He was
born August 22, 1880. He married Leola Gibson August 7, 1904. She was born

30, 1963. Martha is a daughter of Franklin Elam and Sarah Katherine Wray and
was born in 1891 and will die in April 1981.

They are living with her folks listed as Thomas and Ida Heavener but I have
Flora’s last name as Hamrick. Not sure. Gerald Eugene Putnam is a son of
William Connley Putnam and Mary Elizabeth Poston and

married Flora Belle Hamrick. Flora was born October 14, 1910 and didn’t die
till August 10, 1999. His death report also stated that he got all the way up to

He is 38 NC and an electrician. His wife Lena Lee Byers is 29 NC and a saleslady in a department store. They have Gloria Jane 3 NC. They live with her folks Dare and Myrtle Byers. Hubert Benjamin Putman is a son of Thomas Dickson (Dixon) Putman and Frances ԆannieՊJane Jenkins and was born June 23, 1902 and died in Shelby January 2, 1974. Lena was born in Cleveland County August 15, 1910 and died there June 6, 1997. Kids were Gloria Jane Putnam born March 4, 1937 and Dan Byers Putnam born February 19, 1941.

NC. He is a son of Benjamin Franklin Putman and Verdia
Hughes. He was born May 23, 1878. He married Ada Gertrude Weaver November 28,
1900 and will die August 26, 1954. She was born in 1879 and will die in Shelby
March 4, 1966.

in 1945. Seth is a son of Charles C. Putnam and Eunice Roberts and was born February 21,
1895 and will die in Shelby May 20, 1974. He was single as of the 1930. Bessie is a
daughter of William and Amy Montgomery and was born November 26, 1904 and will
die in Shelby July 28, 1988.
SPURGEON PUTNAM Rippys, Cleveland County

Maggie Lee Bridges is 32 NC and they have Bobbie Gene 11 NC, Billie Roger 8 NC
and Donald B. 3 NC. He is a tenant farmer. He is a son of Clarence Gordon
Putnam and Leola Gibson and was born here August 22, 1905. He married Maggie
December 13, 1925. Maggie was born February 29, 1908 and will die in Shelby
February 22, 1999. She’s a Sadie Hawkins Day girl, being born on the 29th
which only comes around every for years. So even though she lived to be 91, she
only had 22 ‘birthdays.’ Sturgeon will die in Shelby August 6, 1986 at age 80
and celebrated all 80 of them.

Orla is a daughter of John Henderson Hawkins and Hattie Hughes and was born
December 7, 1901 and will die in Shelby July 14, 1993.

have Sarah Louise 18 NC, Jack 16 NC and Charles Monroe 12 NC. He is a son of
James Monroe Putnam and Sarah Louise Bostic from here. He was born April 12,
1890 and will die August 19, 1957. He married Wilma Bridges February 15, 1920.
The son Charles Monroe Putnam was born April 6, 1928 and lived in Alamance
County California. He returned to Shelby where he will die October 2, 1990. He
is 62 and widowed at that time. The son Jack Robert Putnam was born September
4, 1923 and will die in Shelby August 9, 2004. He married a cousin Willie
Putnam who I think was a daughter of Leo and Ada Putnam from here. The daughter
Sarah Louise was born March 6, 1921.

County and will die April 1, 1997 in Gastonia, Gaston County. He married Edith
Corrine Dedmon October 4, 1936. She was born March 9, 1915 and died
August 17, 1998. He is a farmer.

She was born in Shelby July 7, 1908 and will die here September 20, 1995. They both are weavers in a cotton mill.

He is Baxter Cleveland Putnam a son of James Monroe Putman and Sarah Louise Bostick from Cleveland County North Carolina (grandson of Sam Putman and Artie Harden from Rippys, Cleveland County). Baxter is listed as 55 NC (actually born June 28, 1885 in Cherokee County South Carolina), and his wife Ida Beau Hamrick is 57 NC and they have Frances Rebekah 18 CA. He was single in Tuolumne County California in 1920. He returned to North Carolina and married Ida Beau Hamrick on March 12, 1921. Ida is a daughter of Sidney Hamrick and Louisa Elizabeth Harrill and was born June 29, 1882 and will die here June 9, 1965. He will die February 14, 1955. The daughter Rebekah was born January 13, 1922 in Sonora, California and will die in Shelby March 1, 2007. She will marry William Yancey Ellis here May 31, 1944 and they will move to Wilmington where Yancey will work in the shipyard and Rebekah will teach school there and back here when they returned after the War in 1945.

58 NC and only Ralph William 26 NC and his wife Mary Elizabeth Kukonu 23 SC are still at home. He was born here April 9,
1876. He first married Mary C. Wesson who died in 1898. He then married Laura
Street April 13, 1900. Laura was born in 1881 and will die in Shelby March 1,
1971 at age 90. He will die in Shelby March 21, 1947. The son Ralph was born August 22,
1913. He married Elizabeth Kukonu in Hawaii, and will
die in Shelby on October 3, 1973. He was in Honolulu in 1934 and also
listed in the 1940 census there working in the Navy shipyard.
C. A. (CHARLES ASHLEY) PUTNAM Shelby, Cleveland County

Sarah Jane Eskridge. He is still a spinner at a cotton mill and Sarah works in

January 4, 1944 at age 84. Sarah is a daughter of Calvin Eskridge and
Margaret Hendrick. She was born October 3, 1861 and will die here January 16,

SC. The whole family moved up to North Carolina in about 1925. He was born
August 15, 1902 and will die in Shelby April 18, 1985. Onie Johnson was born
October 7, 1910 and will die June 18, 2003. They were in Polk County North
Carolina by 1926 and in 1930 in Robeson County North Carolina.

GEORGE PUTNAM Shelby, Cleveland County
He is 73 NC NC NC and still single. He is living with his sister Eliza Jane Wilkins 72 NC and her husband Thomas Wilkins 71 NC. They are children of William Hambly and Margaret Putman from Gaston County. They were all here together in 1920 and 1930 too. George was born August 25, 1866. He never married. He will die in Shelby August 12, 1946 at age 79. His sister Eliza was born January 21, 1868. She married Thomas Anderson Wilkins. He was a son of William Wilkins and Jane Fortenberry of Cleveland County. He was born June 16, 1868 and will die in Shelby September 8, 1940. They are in Shelby, Cleveland County in 1920 and 1930, probably earlier. Eliza will die in Shelby January 2, 1964.

She is 33 SC and now widowed. Her husband Clyde Rose Putnam has died here December 30, 1934. Clyde Junior 14 NC, Robert 12 NC, Janet 8 NC, Lavonne 5 NC are at home with her. They were married in 1925 and were here in 1930. Clyde was a son of Stephen Perry Putnam and Martha Susan Montjoy and was born in Laurens County South Carolina August 15, 1902. His dad died there in 1912 and he came up here with his widowed mother Mattie in the 1920s.

here in Shelby. He was born March 9, 1888. He was at home through 1920 and then
married Angie in 1924. Jasper will die in Shelby November 20, 1962. Angie was
born February 10, 1899 and will die in Shelby April 14, 1988 at age 90.

She is 62 NC and now widowed. Her daughters Grace Lyons 32
NC and Annie Sue 21 NC are still at home. There were 8 kids all told. Selena
Pauline Elmore was the second wife of William Adkin Putman from here where he
was born March 1, 1862. They were in Gaston County in 1910 and 1920 and then
back here in 1930. William died here November 12, 1935. William was a son of
Samuel Putman and Winnie Long from here. Lena was born May 18, 1877 and will
die here January 28, 1945.

She was born in Cleveland County January 21, 1895 and will die February 15, 1986 at age 91. Carl will die here April 19, 1967. They were here in 1920 and he was in Greenville County South Carolina in 1930.

is 40 NC and they have Delphia Inez 17 NC, Dora Lena 16 NC, Jessie Frances 15

here January 11, 1934. Minnie is a daughter of Robert Thomas Threatt and

She is 30 SC and lives with her folks Will and Daisy Griffin. She has two kids Elizabeth 10 NC and Billy 3 NC. She and Nancy Elizabeth, 6 months old then, were here with her folks in 1930 and said she was married. She says she is still married and still no husband around. Okay, I find a death certificate for the son Billy Dean Putnam born September 15, 1936 in Shelby and died in Charlotte November 7, 1980. Sadly, no mention of his parents.
ROBERT JOSEPH PUTNAM Shelby, Cleveland County
He is 25 IA single and living in the Hotel Charles here in
town. He is a fixer at a textile mill. He was in Denver in 1935 and Dubuque,
Iowa before that. He is a son of Charles A. Putnam and Ellen Josephine Dooling
and was born in Dubuque October 12, 1914 and will die at age 91 on February 6,
2006 in the Retirement Community in Mars Hill, North Carolina. This is on the
New York Dutch Putman line going back to Jackson County Iowa to Carroll County
Illinois to Cattaraugus County New York.
RUTH PUTNAM Shelby, Cleveland County
She is 26 NC single and lodging with a couple of other
people. She is a secretary at the County Health Department and the other two
are nurses there. She would be a daughter of Wade Hill Putnam and Mildred
Goforth. Ruth Jane was born October 6, 1913. She will marry William Henry Jacokes and die in Taylor, Michigan December 31, 1985.

She will die May 7, 1961.

will die in Shelby November 16, 1973. He will die here August 27, 1953. The son
Bruce was born September 13, 1916 and will die in Shelby June 10, 1948. He
never married. The County hospital is in Shelby and most out-of
-towners who died there were in the hospital.

Putman they were here in 1920. Charles died October 6, 1926, and Annie

was a son of Benjamin Andrew Putman and Mary Gates. He was born July 27,
1872. He married Annie Miller in Cleveland County on July 12, 1906. She was a
daughter of C. and Emma Miller. She was born November 22, 1888 and will die
here September 17, 1945.

She was born September 18, 1879 in North Carolina and will die in Shelby, Cleveland County July 7, 1972. Julius will die in Durham, North Carolina May 5, 1944.

He lives with or next to his widowed mother and runs the family farm.

Jasper Rufus was born March 6, 1912 and will die in Kings Mountain March 4, 1984. He married Dona Prue Beattie February 7, 1932. She was born January 21, 1910 and will also die in Kings Mountain on March 10, 1981.

He is 24 NC and his wife Ola Hamrick is 28 NC. He is Marion Alonzo a son of Arthur Glenn Putman and his second wife Minnie Florence Gregg. Minnie died in 1920 and their kids were with her folks R. W. and Mary Gregg in 1930. He and Ola are still living on Mary Griggs farm. His dad Arthur was born April 9, 1882. He married Rebecca Jane Willmont September 22, 1909. She died in childbirth on January 8, 1911. He then married Minnie Florence Gregg March 26, 1911. She was born March 8, 1884 and died March 22, 1920. They had four children. He then married Bertha Ray McSwain on July 28, 1920. She was born March 8, 1884 and died November 22, 1946. They had another 4 children. He married his fourth wife Ruby Lane Evans on March 1, 1949. They had 2 more children. Arthur died June 23, 1955. Anyway ɠMarion was born February 12, 1916. He married Ola Maggie Hamrick February 26, 1939. Ola was a daughter of William Batey and Ella Eliza Hamrick and was born February 12, 1912 and will die February 5, 2001 in Shelby. Marion will die in Kings Mountain September 26, 2010.

He is Francis McCall Putnam, a son of James Butler Putnam and Elizabeth McCall and was born in Pickens County South Carolina February 22, 1912 and was at home in Florence, Florence County in 1920 and 1930. He will die back there in Florence County April 28, 1984. His brother Jim is here too.

He will die in New Bern, Craven County North Carolina July 25, 1979. His brother Francis is here too.

Vera is a daughter of William Smith Hamrick and Mary Lee Roberts and was born in Shelby January 13, 1899 and will die in Lexington September 26, 1991.

Also here are 2 of Gertrude’s sisters Virginia Holland 31 NC and divorced and Louise Pittman 20 NC and still single. He was also listed here as well by himself working as a teller in the bank that he is now in their loan department. I find a birth record that he was born in Rutherford County August 18, 1906 and will die here in Tarboro February 20, 1990. States his dad was Benjamin E. Putnam. Can’t figure who Ben was though.

John Putnam and Lisa Brunner, and was shown at home in Carroll County Missouri
in 1900. Mattie, by the way, is descended from Indians in Guilford County. She
is six generations from Chief Powhatan. The son Buel
Junior was born December 27, 1922 and will die here in North Carolina February
28, 2006.

Dora was born December 25, 1886 and will die here in Winston-Salem on October 20, 1969. They are buried in the Oakland Cemetery in Gaffney, Cherokee County South Carolina.

1920 and so was he as he was married here in 1914. This line goes back through
Illinois to Genesee County New York to Massachusetts.

of Rush Douglas Putnam and Martha Patterson and was born here January 5, 1903
and will die in Charlotte May 25, 1982. Effie is a daughter of Harvey and
Lillian Bass and was born May 7, 1907 and will die also in Charlotte on
November 5, 1997. They were separated here in 1930 but have gotten back
together. The daughter Rebecca was listed as a niece of Paul and Mattie Eckland here in 1930 and is also with them now in
Charlotte.

October 10, 1922 and died in Kings Mountain October 18, 2001. The son Lawrence
Edward was born March 19, 1925 and will die in Kings Mountain on May 4, 1987.
He was divorced at that time. The daughter Margaret died in Kings Mountain
September 7, 2007. She was married twice, first to Emery Murray and then to James
M. Todd. She outlived both of them. She worked for Western Auto in Gastonia.

He is a son of William Alexander Putnam and Nancy Wesson and was born September 8, 1887. He married Alice Covington of Gastonia in February 1929. He listed himself as deaf and dumb on several records. Alice was born in Washington DC and was living by herself with her mother Daisy Covington in Washington in 1930 and 1935. They were divorced but I don’t know when. He will die in Charlotte June 20, 1951.

He is William Akin Putnam, a son of David Putnam and Mary Catherine Carpenter from here and then Gaston County. He was born April 19, 1885 and died July 12, 1940. He married Zennie Propst. She was born May 26, 1886 and died February 24, 1954.

born here in Gaston County February 16, 1874. Elizabeth is a daughter of
Ephraim D. Stroupe and Amanda J. Hicks and was born
October 27, 1893, and she will die in Shelby, Cleveland County June 14, 1952.
Frank will die here in Gastonia December 22, 1964.

son and then in 1930 she was with him listed as a widowed mother. Maybe he was
born out of wedlock. Just don’t know. He married Joyce Elizabeth Fairchild July
31, 1927. He will die here October 5, 1976 and Joyce will die September 22,
1988 in Waco, Gaston County. They are in Anna Arundel County Maryland in 1950.

Smith and Alice Childers. He will die in Salisbury, Rowan County September 11, 1985. Wilma
will die February 3, 2010 in Salisbury where they will live most of their

and was here in 1930 with him. Didn’t work out. Robert is a son of Rush Douglas

they have Clarence 4 NC and Mary 3 NC. He is an iceman at a refrigerator
company and she is a sewer at a cotton mill. They are living with her folks
Walter and Ella. Clarence Edward Putman pops up in Charlotte in 1920 with his
folks Connelly Putman and Fannie Johnson. I first see Connelly in 1880 when he
was living with an Elizabeth Martin who was his mother. Obviously dad died or
split, and mom remarried. I do not know his father's name yet. Clarence’s death
certificate gives his folks names and that he was born December 17, 1912 and
died in Gastonia September 11, 1971.

November 21, 1904 and will die here in Gastonia August 7, 1979.

He married Lillie Weathers on September 29, 1890. Lillie was a daughter of Jenkins Devaney Weathers and Eunice Bailey. She died July 9, 1904, and he married Lillie Lee Sheppard in about 1906. They have been in Shelby, Cleveland County up till now. He will die here August 6, 1943.

Something will happen to Lucille as on December 16, 1941 he will have a second
child, Portia Marcie Putnam and her mother is Lucretia Madeline Cochran. Maybe
Lucille died in childbirth as he must have married her shortly afterwards. He
was still married to Madeline who won’t die till November 6, 2000. Gets even

Gaston County August 10, 1957. Ella is not here now and she is listed now as
being widowed with their married daughter Ruby and husband Lester Summerall in Henderson County.

52 NC and widowed. Her son Samuel 20 NC is with her. Myrtle V. Berrier was married to DeWitt Preston Putman in Iredell
County in 1910 and 1920. She was widowed in Gastonia in 1930 with Sam and two
daughters. DeWitt was a son of Elias William Putman and Margaret Gilleland. He
was born October 7, 1862 and died January 19, 1929. He buried back in Iredell
County.

Shellie was born in Upper Little River December 17, 1908. He is a carpenter.

Margaret Ella Baker and was born December 4, 1890 and will die September 18, 1963 in
Waynesville, Haywood
County. He married Cora Allamae Presley on November
20, 1910. She is a daughter of Thomas Presley and Lillie Corabell Delilah Medford and was born July 29, 1894 and
will die in Haywood County November 1, 1981. As to the kids here. Letch
Horace Putman was born
March 22, 1921. He married Lessie Kiser in Winston-Salem December 20, 1941. He
died in Haywood County May 26, 2002. Lessie was born September 24, 1922 and
died January 29, 2005. Reva Mae Putman was born June 22, 1925. She married a Wiggins. Joseph Lewis Putman was born August 1,
1936. From his obituary he died in Garden City, South Carolina Monday April 30,
2007. He stayed in Haywood County and worked for A&P stores for 25 years
and then opened up his own IGA food store and Putnam Power Equipment. He
married Judy Blazer in 1956 and she survived him.

Ralph Edgar Putnam is a son of Rufus Harden Putman and Hester Pressley from here in town. He was born January 6, 1888. He married Hester Pressley on December 17, 1909. He will die in Canton, Hayward County October 13, 1960. He lives next door to his folks on one side and a cousin Luches on the other side.

He is listed as a nephew with Wilburn and Frances Conrad. He is a son of
Montville Putman and Mary Lou Conrad and was born here March 27, 1891. He was
married to a cousin Frances Burr Putnam who died February 17, 1930. She was a
daughter of Joseph Putnam and Matilda Conrad. This is the Conrad connection. He
later married a cousin Callie Putman. She was a daughter of James Putman and Linda Price from here and was born March 2, 1909. They
separated after a while as she had a couple more kids with someone else and
Mark wasn’t going to claim any more of them. Mark will die here on April 11,
1948.
CALLIE PUTNAM Pigeon Township, Haywood County
She is 31 NC married but separated at this time from Mark
Webb Putnam. They were in Waynesville before this. She has Nathaniel Kirk 7 NC,
Hattie J. 5 NC, and John Thomas 2 NC. Also, she has Eva Lusk 14 NC, Helen Lusk
11 NC and Reeves Lusk from a prior marriage or more likely affair. Callie is a
Putnam/Putman herself being a daughter of James Putman and Linda Price and was
born in Haywood County March 2, 1909. She married Mark Putman, a cousin, in about 1931. Mark Webb Putnam is a son
of Montville A. Putman and Mary Lou Conrad and was born March 27, 1891. He married
another cousin, Frances Burr Putman on April 10, 1917. Frances was a daughter of
Joseph W. Putman and Matilda Conrad. They were in Jonathans Creek Haywood County in 1920. She
died February 17, 1930. He then married Callie about 1931. She was either
married or had an affair with a Lusk guy for the three kids listed here. They
separated after a while as she had a couple more kids with someone else and
Mark wasn’t going to claim any more of them. There will be 4 more Putnam kids
born between 1940 and 1947 and I’m not sure who the daddy was. Ditto the son
John Thomas. Mark died on April 11, 1948, and Callie died September 8, 1971. Gotta remember Haywood County
is way over in the bottom left of the State by Tennessee and deep into the
Smokey Mountains and Appalachia, and where I am sure the term hillbillies came
from.
CLARENCE PUTMAN Hazelwood, Waynesville Township, Haywood

He is 39 NC; his new wife Helen is only 19 NC and they have
Eugene 8 NC and Lucile 6/12 NC. He works in a furniture factory. He is Clarence
Levi Clingman Putman and is a son of Robena Putman from here. He was born July
1, 1900 and was with his mom in 1910. Then he joined the Army and was a private
in Camp Marfa, Presidio County Texas in 1920. Then in 1930 he was married to a
gal named Ruth Cleveland Jones in Fort Bragg, Fayetteville, North Carolina. She
is in Washington DC now. She was married to a guy before Clarence and will
marry 2 more before dying in Arlington, Virginia January 26, 1995. Now, as to
Clarence’s folks. His mom was Robena Emeline Brock and she was married to
Edward Putman who died in 1897. Then she had 5 more kids out of wedlock. Never
knew the dad or dads. But, just found Clarence’s Death Certificate and it says
he died September 23, 1953 here in Waynesville and his mom was Robena Putman
and his dad Dunk Robinson. FINALLY got the name.

She is a daughter of Melvin Ross Buchanan and Lydia Clark and was born March 8, 1910 in Macon County and will die in Hazelwood April 28, 2006 at age 96. Now, as to folks. Robena was married to Edward Putman here. He was a son of Wilson Putman and Emily Coles from Rutherford County. Edward died in 1897 but Robena had another 5 kids out of wedlock. Maybe Robena later married Robert Putnam or just had out of wedlock.

here in Iredell County December 24, 1920 and that he died in Mooresville,
Iredell County May 21, 1976. Mary Lou is a daughter of Leonard Laws and Mary
Ida Smith and was born in Wilkes County October 8, 1902 and will also die in
Mooresville July 10, 1976.

He was born there in September 1885. He was back with his folks in Pineville,
Kentucky in 1920 but obviously was here in the 1915-1919 period as Clarence was
born there. In 1910 he was in the Army stationed at the Jefferson Barracks in
St. Louis County Missouri. The son Clarence Dawson was born here March 19, 1917
and will die in Pensacola, Florida July 20, 1986. The son Charles M. was born
August 11, 1928.

Putnam who shot two neighbors and then himself over a dispute about fence
between the two properties. All that happened April 20, 1933. Lillie is now 73
NC and widowed of course. Her son Isaiah is 44 NC, his wife Rosa Lee Dellinger
45 NC and they have still at home Augusta ‘Gus’ Harold 19 NC, Cecil Blair 17 NC
and Charles I. 11 NC. Lillie owns the farm but Isaiah runs it. His wife Rosa is
the daughter of Benjamin Dellinger who along with her mother was shot with a
shotgun by Lillie’s ex ‘Coustie.’

Glenn 12 NC with him. He is Luther Oliver Putnam a son of Romulus Philmore Putnam and Laura Turbyfill.
He was born February 28, 1884 in Iredell County, and will die in Lincoln County
March 4, 1958. He was married to Minnie Teague and they were in Catawba County
up through 1920. Minnie died December 9, 1924. He married a gal named Bertie in
1926 and Luther Glenn is theirs. They were in Gaston County in 1930. Luther
says he is married by Bertie isn’t around. His 1954 death certificate has his
wife then as Ruby Reep.

Clevie was born October 27, 1882 and will die here in Lincolnton on
October 30, 1968. Jim will die here February 5, 1948.

He is 60 NC NC NC and owns a barbershop. His wife Cora Jane Hallman is 60 and they still have Dorothy 33 NC at home. He is a son of Thomas Dickson Putman and Frances Jennings from Waco, Cleveland County. He was born there September 16, 1879 and will die here in Lincolnton October 2, 1953. They were here in 1920 and 1930. Cora was born March 30, 1880 and will be here till she dies April 11, 1969.

Lula was a daughter of Emanuel Byers and Dorinda Adeline Stewart and was born in Iredell County July 26, 1872 and died in Gaston County November 3, 1938.

5 months pregnant. After the daughter Birge was born
December 2, 1897, John took off to Louisiana and married a gal named Bernice Orgeron in 1911 and was with her till he died 12, 1927.

They were there in Cleveland County from then till he died in Cleveland County March 26, 1925. Maggie is a daughter of Stanhope Anthony and Margaret Graham and was born January 8, 1870 and will die May 26, 1942 in Charlotte. Their only child was Eliza Rae Putman born April 23, 1894 in Shelby and will die in Charlotte April 21, 1958. She married Robert Marion Ross. He was born March 14, 1893 and will die in Charlotte June 19, 1967. They have two sons, Robert Marion Ross Junior and William Putnam Ross.

where they were born. Audie was a son of James Craton Putman and Amanda Wesson

married Minnie in 1913. Minnie is a daughter of Cyrus Wilson Black and Flora
Amanda Nicholson and was born May 31, 1885 and will die February 21, 1978.

She is 14 NC single and a niece of Paul and Mattie Eckland. She was with them in Belmont, Gaston County in 1930. She is a daughter of Julian Watson Putman and Effie Bass who just split up and were separated there in 1930, but are back together there now in 1940 and Rebecca is also listed there as well.

She is a daughter of Alfred P. Strider and Jennie Margaret Rogers from Mecklenburg County. Sam will die in Huntersville August 2, 1965.

December 29, 1856. His wife was Etta Jane Stewart, and they were married about
1880. She was born March 7, 1867 in Mitchell County and died September 11, 1938
in the Marion General Hospital in Marion, McDowell County. In 1900 he was also
listed with his brother William in Buncombe County. They lived in Snow Creek,
Mitchell County North Carolina through the 1920 census when he was 63 and Etta 55.
Ed will die here in Marion July 30, 1941.

Elmer is a son of Charles Sidney Putman and Roxanna Bowman from here. He was born here November 1, 1909. He married Mary and lived in Rutherford County, and died at age 79 on May 10, 1989.

LAWSON H. (HILLARD) PUTMAN Franklinville, Randolph County
He is
45 NC, and his wife Ellen Barbara Taylor is 42 NC. They have Lavada Elizabeth
19 NC, Samuel 8 NC and their married daughter Mildred Molly Estelle 21 NC and
her husband Athlee High Patterson 22 NC. He and the
kids work in a cotton mill. Not Sam of course. Hill is a son of Isaac F. Putman
and Barbara Ray Wright from Gaston County. He was born there July 2, 1894 and
appears with his widowed mother Barbara there in 1900. She wasn’t widowed as
Isaac was around till he died in 1910. She was there with the kids still in
1920. Hill and Ellen were in South Point, Gaston County in 1920 and in York
County South Carolina in 1930, but I can’t find them then. Anyway, Ellen is a
daughter of James Thomas Taylor and Margaret Frances ‘Maggie’ Morrison and was
born in Cleveland County May 2, 1898 and will die in Gaston County March 7,
1954. Hill will die in Mount Holly, Gaston County May 23, 1958.
BENNY A. PUTNAM Hamlet, Richmond County
He is
31 NC and his wife Isabelle is 31 NC too. He was in Durham in 1935. He is
Benjamin Alexander Putnam a son of Robert Alexander Putnam and Willie Rosalie Rippy from Rippys, Cleveland County. Rippys obviously named
after her family. He was born there May 3, 1908 and will die here in Richmond
County August 4, 1953. He married Isabelle Howe June 13, 1934. He is in
advertising for an ice cream company.
THOMAS PUTNAM Faith, Litaker Township, Rowan County
He is 10 NC and his brother Jerry is 4 NC. They live with their mother Nettie 28 NC who has now married Lawrence Watts. Juanita Robinette was married to Thomas Harold Putnam in Iredell County in 1930. Thomas was a son of DeWitt Preston Putman and Myrtle Berrier from Iredell County. Thomas died there September 24, 1935 and Nettie married Lawrence recently. This one is Thomas Harold Putman Jr. born September 9, 1929. He will marry Mary Elizabeth Gaither and will die here March 29, 1983.
HARRY S. PUTNAM Salisbury, Rowan County
He is 25 NC, his wife Edna K. is 24 NC and they have Harry S. 4 NC and Harriet L. 4 NC. He is a son of William Adkin Putnam and his second wife Pauline Frances Elmore and was born in Gaston County March 9, 1915. He will die in August 1971. Both he and Edna work in a cotton mill.
LEE PUTNAM Salisbury, Rowan County
Edward
Lee is 71 NC and is retired from the railroad. His wife Nannie Mahaley is 65
NC. They were here in 1910, 1920 and 1930. He is a son of Elias William Putman
and Margaret Isabella Gilleland. He was born August 26, 1868 and was at home in
Iredell County in 1870 and 1880 and single here in 1900. He married Nannie L.
Mahaley here August 27, 1901. Nannie was born November 23, 1874, and will die
in Salisbury March 30, 1960. He will die in Salisbury a year from now on April
16, 1941.
IRA PUTMAN Cool Spring, Rutherford County
He is
40 NC NC NC and still
single and boarding. He is Ira William Putman a son of Isaac Andrew Jackson
Putman and Sallie Ann Higgins. Isaac died May 26, 1906 and he was here in 1910
with his widowed mother Sallie. Ira was born October 24, 1899 and will die in
Mountain Home, Tennessee March 20, 1979. He never married.
W. J. (WILLIAM JOHN) PUTMAN Cool Spring, Rutherford County
Billy is 63 NC and his wife Betty Ann Owens is 48 NC. He is
a son of Thomas Y. Putman
and Sarah Jane Robbins and was born here August 23, 1876. He married Margaret
Amanda Owens on December 30, 1896. She was born April 28, 1882 died on July 25,
1907. Billy then married her sister Betty Ann Owens on December 27, 1907. She
was born October 2, 1891. Both were daughters of William L. Owens and Eva
Malinda Allen. He will die in High Shoals, Rutherford County on May 9, 1952.
Betty will die there on October 11, 1958.
ALONZO PUTMAN High Shoals, Rutherford County
He is 38 NC and his wife Mary Johnson 28 NC and they have Shirley 3 NC. He is Thomas Alonzo Putman a son of William Putman and Margaret Amanda Owens and was born here March 24, 1902 and will die January 27, 1994. He married Mary Johnson. Their only child was Shirley born January 28, 1937. She married Max Toney.
BRISCO PUTMAN High Shoals, Rutherford County
He is
40 NC NC NC and is a doffer
in a cotton mill. His wife Thursie Wheeler is 34 NC
and a spinner in the mill. They have Brisco Jr. 12
NC. He is a son of James Putman and Martha Jan Owens from here. Johnny Brisco Putman was born October 10, 1900 and died in Rutherfordton May 5, 1989. He married Thursa
Wheeler September 20, 1924. They have been here all their lives.
GEORGE PUTMAN High Shoals, Rutherford County
He is 25 (actually 27) NC and his wife Vlaya is 21 SC. He is a son of William Andrew Putman and Mary Leona Pinson from here. He was at home here in 1930. They both work in a cotton mill.
GRADY PUTNAM High Shoals, Rutherford County
He is 32 NC and his wife Rebecca Melvina ‘Minnie’ White is 27 TN and they have Sadie Lou 9 TN, James Willard 6 NC, Mary Jane 4 NC and Ima Jewel 1 NC. He is a carder at a cotton mill. He is Grady Avery Putnam, a son of James Alfred Putnam and Margaret Jane Owens and was born here in Rutherford County January 13, 1908. He was here with them in 1910 and 1920. His dad died in Tennessee in 1928 and he was with his widowed mother in Lawrence County Tennessee in 1930. That’s where he met and married Vinnie February 17, 1930. Vinnie was born September 6, 1912 and will die in Spartanburg, South Carolina December 15, 1992. Grady will become a Reverend and will die here January 17, 1973.
KENNETH PUTMAN High Shoals, Rutherford County
He is 31 NC,
his wife Inez 28 NC and they have Broadus 8 NC and Emily 2 NC. He is George
Kenneth Putman a son of William Andrew Putman and Mary Leona Pinson and was
born here April 28, 1939
and will die November 13, 2012 in Henrietta, Rutherford County.

He is 41 NC, his wife Eula Belle Henson is 42 NC and they
have Elizabeth 17 NC, Ernestine 14 NC and Janette 12 NC. He is a trimmer in a
textile mill. He is a son
of James Alfred Putman and Margaret Jane Owens. He was born here September 25,
1898, and will be here till he dies January 4, 1964.
MONROE PUTMAN High Shoals, Rutherford County
He is 35 NC and his wife Lucy Ethel Dobbins is 34 NC. He is James Monroe Putman a son of William ‘Willy’ John Putman and Margaret Amanda Owens from here. He was born May 13, 1904 and will die in Rutherfordton November 11, 1996.
ALBERT PUTNAM Rutherfordton, Rutherford County

40 NC and works in a lumberyard. His wife Gazzie Mahalla Hord is 36 NC, and
they have Alvin H. 14 NC and Ruby 12 NC. Also here is Gazzie’s
sister Edna Hord 28 NC. He is a son of Charles Franklin Putman and Betty Jane
Kendrick from Rippys Cleveland County. He was born July 26, 1899 and will be
here till he dies September 11, 1987. Gazzie is a daughter of George Clifton
Hord and Lucretia Emma Lee and was born February 1, 1904 in Cleveland County
and will die in Rutherford County July 13, 2003.
DEVANEY PUTNAM Rutherfordton, Spindale Township, Rutherford County
He is 46 NC and his wife Nancy Ada Scruggs 47 SC and they have Melvin Odell 19 NC Lionel Thomas 15 NC and William Eugene ‘Willie’ a door-to-door peddler. Devaney is a son of Joseph Devaney Putnam and Roxana Jane Weathers. He was born March 20, 1893 in Spindale, Rutherford County. He married Nancy Ada Scruggs in 1912. They spent their whole lives in Rutherfordton, North Carolina. He will die here March 23, 1950. Ada is a daughter of Thomas Scruggs and Martha Jane Green and was born June 10, 1892 and will die here December 17, 1967. As to the kids they are: Leon Elmer Putnam born November 1, 1913 and died May 10, 1989. He married Mary Jones. They are here in town. Clyde T. Putnam born February 6, 1916 and died October 27, 1918. Melvin Odell Putnam born June 3, 1921 and died January 8, 1988. He married Cordie Lee Jenkins. Lionel Thomas Putnam born August 10, 1925, died January 16, 1994. He married Lorna Hill while in the Marines stationed in Rhode Island in 1944. Earl Putnam born in 1927 and died in 1930. William Eugene ‘Billy’ Putnam was born December 14, 1933 and died November 1, 1969. He married Betty Womack.
LEON E. (ELMER) PUTNAM Rutherfordton, Spindale Township, Rutherford County
He is
27 NC, and his wife Mary Jones is 29 VA and they have Richard P. 5 NC and Sandra
5/12 NC. They were in Shelby, Cleveland County before coming here. Leon is a
son of Devaney Putnam and Ada Scruggs here in town. He was born here November
1, 1913. He will die in Buncombe County North Carolina May 10, 1989.
GEORGE W. (WASHINGTON) PUTMAN Sulphur Springs, Rutherford County
He is 52 NC and his wife Mary 52 NC. He is a son of Samuel W. Putman and Jane Holcombe from here. He was born November 15, 1887. According to their tombstones, George died December 4, 1975 and Mary was born August 24, 1886 and died June 19, 1967.
GROVER L. (LEE) PUTMAN Sulphur Springs, Rutherford County

and a farmer now. His wife Ada Belle Cole is 34 and they have Oneida 13 NC,
William Darrell 11 NC, Margie Lee 8 NC, Willis 6 NC, Mary Jane 2 NC and Landrum
Chivous 1 NC. He is a son of William Andrew Putman
and Mary Leona Pinson and was born here April 15, 1906 and will die in
Rutherfordton April 6, 1965. Ada Belle is a daughter of J. J. Cole and Lula Splawn and was born August 5, 1905 and will die in
Rutherfordton July 16, 1960.
LEROY PUTMAN Henderson Township, Vance County
He is 35 SC, his wife Etura Strother
is 27 NC and her sister Katrina Strother 17 NC is with them. They work in a
cotton mill. He is a fixer and she is a weaver. He is William Leroy Putman a
son of William Putman and Minnie Brown and was born July 9, 1906 in Greenville,
South Carolina. He and his divorced dad were in Nashville, Tennessee in 1930.
William is a son of Cornelius Putman and Margaret Peden
from Laurens County and then Greenville County. He has remarried and is here in
Henderson now.
WILL MITCHEL
PUTMAN Henderson Township, Vance County
He is 58 SC and his new wife Nettie Lee is 44 SC. William is
a son of Neal Cornelius Putman and Margaret Eleanor Peden
from Laurens County and then Greenville County. He was married to Minnie Brown
in Greenville, South Carolina in 1910 and 1920 and then divorced in Nashville
with his son Leroy. He will e going back to Greenville and die there December
10, 1958.
GLENN W. (WILLIAM)
PUTNAM Raleigh, Wake County
He is 38 SC SC SC
and a repair man with the telephone Company. His wife Ellen is 34 NC and they
have Glenn W. Jr. 13 NC, Betsy C. 6 NC and Carolyn S. 3 NC. They were in
Greensboro, Guilford County in 1930 and 1935. They are in Orangeburg, South
Carolina in 1950. He just pops up in 1910 in Spartanburg, South Carolina at age
9 living as a nephew with a Jackson family from North Carolina. Found a great
family sheet on Ancestry while trying to figure him in the 1950 Census in
Orangeburg, South Carolina. Thank You! He was a son of Linsey Grady Putnam and
Clarinda Elizabeth ‘Bessie’ Jones, and was born in Spartanburg, South Carolina
April 22, 1901. His mom died in Spartanburg July 18, 1904 and his dad died
there April 27, 1909. That’s why the Jacksons took him in off the street. His
dad Linsey was a son of Leonard Putnam and Margaret Swain from Rutherford
County North Carolina to Spartanburg County South Carolina where Linsey was
born and where his folks died, mom in 1899 and his dad in 1902. Glenn married
Ellen up in Guilford County North Carolina November 4, 1925. She is a daughter
of Oliver Perry Shelton and Addie Florist Rippey from
Alamance County North Carolina where she was born January 31, 1906 and she will
die in Columbia, Richland County South Carolina in April 1984. Glenn will die
there May 15, 1963. Their son Glenn Junior was born January 27, 1927 in
Guilford County North Carolina and will marry Linda Lewis in Gaston County
North Carolina June 16, 1961 and they will head off to Texas where she will die
February 10, 1996 and he May 14, 2002. That ‘mysterious’ family out of Guilford
County North Carolina.
PERRY PUTMAN Wilkesboro, Wilkes County
He is 75 (think 72) NC and his new young wife Mollie is 25
NC and they have Carrie Lee 5 NC. He was here in 1920 and 1930 married to Queen
or something. Have no ideas as to who his folks were.
CARL C. (CLIFTON)
PUTNAM Wilson Township, Wilson County
He is 36 NC, his new wife Inez Atkinson Hobgood is 23 NC and
they have Charles 5 NC. He is a painter of buildings. Carl is a son of John
Samuel Putnam and Laura Agnes Hucks and was born in Gastonia, Gaston County
March 8, 1904. His dad just took off and left Laura and the kids and married
Dora Dean Costello and they were in Washington DC till he died July 30, 1921.
Carl married Hallie May Owens May 20, 1923 in Tarboro, Edgecombe County.
They divorced about 1929 and he then married Inez Atkinson Hobgood in
Greenville County Virginia on June 3, 1932. Inez is a daughter of Eugene Simon
Hobgood and Rebecca Dillard Caraway and was born in Pitt County March 1, 1917
and will die in Rocky Mount, Nash County February 17, 1989.

son of Druary Alston Putman and Ellen Cornelia Irby.
He was born in August 1860 in Cleveland County. He married Alice E. Mauck and was in Buncombe County North Carolina in 1900 and
1910. They were married in 1881 in Cleveland County. They were here in Yancy
County in 1930.
